Is it better to epilate, wax, or shave? Read on to discover the difference between the three most popular hair removal methods and find out which one is right for you.

What is an epilator?

Depilation is the process of removing hair with a device just like an electric shaver. It consists of a rotating head of tweezers that traps hairs and pulls them from the root as it is run across the skin.

Pros:

  1. Less painful than waxing
  2. Hairs take longer to grow back as the epilator pulls hairs out by the root
  3. Can be used all over the body, including the legs, arms, face, underarms, and bikini area
  4. Remove very short hairs

Cons:

  1. Redness and inflammation
  2. Without sufficient exfoliation, it can lead to ingrown hairs
  3. Charge before use

What is waxing?

Waxing is a type of semi-permanent hair removal that uses warmed wax and swift action to remove hair from the hair follicle. It will take around 2 to 8 weeks for hairs to grow back.

Pros:

  1. Last a lot longer than shaving
  2. Hairs grow slower and finer
  3. Smoother skin because hair is pulled from the root

Cons:

  1. Can be moderately painful, as hair is indeed being ripped out at the root
  2. May lead to ingrown hairs

What is shaving?

Shaving is the most common method used for removing hair with a razor or any other kind of bladed implement.

Pros:

  1. No pain
  2. Quick and easy
  3. Cheap

Cons:

  1. Regrowth happens quickly
  2. Razor burn, nicks, and cuts are possibilities
  3. Those who shave regularly can also become prone to ingrown hairs
